Go see The Wild Robot
Hey friends š - subject says it all!
Sarah and I went to go see The Wild Robot last night, and I'm telling everyone and their brother now to GO SEE IT. It's about learning to love, coexisting with others, and unlearning the instincts that have helped us survive but may be harming our ability to thrive.
WHICH is the exact lesson I'm trying to convey in the The Five Vices of Founders.
Each of the mantras I talk about in the book are useful to us as founders - especially in the early days of starting a business.
"Fake it til you make it" helps us find confidence in periods of self doubt. "Do things that don't scale" makes us feel powerful even if we're small. "Move fast and break things" empowers us to embrace failure instead of fear it.
These are skills that we build in order to survive the perilous journey that is starting a business. And for the most diligent and dedicated among us, we train these skills to become second nature - almost instinctual.
These are the instincts that keep us alive as founders. But, there are times when these instincts actually limit our ability to do what's in the best interest of our stakeholders, our businesses, and ourselves.
"Fake it til you make it" invites us to lie to ourselves and others in order to protect our egos. "Do things that don't scale" makes us insatiably hungry for power and growth. "Move fast and break things" enables us to shirk the responsibility we have for the harm we might cause.
"Sometimes, to survive, you must become more than you were programmed to be"
